Artists of Shelter Island (ARTSI)
The first ever ARTSI Open Studios Tour of Shelter Island opened its doors to the larger Long Island and NYC community on the third weekend of August in 2010.
It was a hit from the start.
A certain credo was set forth that has been maintained ever since:
1) Shelter Island Artists only
2) No charge for admission, no ticketing
3) Always on the third weekend of August, Saturday & Sunday, 12-5pm
ARTSI began as a break-away group from the much larger and well-established Artists Alliance of East Hampton (AAEH). At the time, it represented a distinctive break as to the way Long Island Artists would share their work with the larger public. The ensuing discourse was covered extensively by local papers including The Shelter Island Reporter and The East Hampton Star.
Artists Jackie Black, Janet Culbertson, Roz Dimon, Bob Markell and Mike Zisser were founding members.
Participating artists in the first ARTSI Tour were: Jackie Black, Hap Bowditch, Janet Culbertson, Roz Dimon, Victor Friedman, Jerry Glassberg, Katherine Hammond, Mary Larson, Kathryn Lynch, Diana Malcolmson, Bob Markell, Alexis Martino, Harald Olson, John Pagliaro, Kia Pederson, Olive Reich, June Shatken and Mike Zisser.
The ARTSI OPEN STUDIOS TOUR is now a heavily attended, very popular annual event on Shelter Island with an enormous reach across Long Island, NYC, and beyond.
Artists Emeritus: Mike Zisser, Janet Culbertson, Bob Markell, Victor Friedman
